LR102237: The 2-Pin Handbrake Motor for Range Rover L405 and L494

If you own a Range Rover L405 or an L494 Sport from around the 2016 model year onwards, you will almost certainly need an electric handbrake motor sooner or later. The part is LR102237, the later 2-pin version, and it bolts to the rear brake caliper. It is a small, simple unit that does an important job, and when it fails, it does not do it quietly. You will get warnings, sticking brakes, odd noises and, if it happens on a cold morning, you may find one wheel frozen solid because water has crept inside the motor and iced up overnight.

This post explains what the part is, what it fits, why prices online are all over the place, and why buying the cheapest one you can find usually leads to disappointment.

LR102237

What LR102237 Actually Is

LR102237 is the later 2-pin electric parking brake motor used on:

Earlier versions used a 3-pin motor. In normal cases, the model year makes it obvious which one you need, but there is a crossover period around 2015, 2016 and even into early 2017 where Land Rover used both types. If your vehicle sits in that window, you should check the connector on your existing unit before buying. If it has a 2-pin plug, LR102237 is the correct replacement. You can access the plug from under the car without taking the wheel off. It’s fiddly, but you can.

There is no left or right version. The same motor fits both rear calipers.

Why These Motors Fail

The most common failure is water ingress. Once moisture gets past the seal, the internal gears corrode, and the motor begins to bind. It may whine, stick or simply refuse to release. In cold weather, it is even more dramatic. Any water inside can freeze solid, locking the mechanism and sometimes the entire wheel. Owners often learn about the problem for the first time when the car refuses to move on a winter morning.

There is no effective repair for these motors. You replace them.

Why Prices Online Vary So Wildly

Type LR102237 into Google and the results read like a lucky dip. At the bottom end, you have the very cheap £20 specials from Chinese sellers you have never heard of. At the top end, you have the £200 to £300 genuine motors from the main dealer or OEM suppliers.

Here is the reality behind those listings:

At the other end of the scale, paying hundreds for a genuine unit is not something most owners feel enthusiastic about, especially when these motors have a reputation for failing again once water gets inside them.

There is a sensible middle ground. You want a good quality motor from a decent manufacturer, one who actually knows about these cars, knows how to fit the part themselves, and a seller who actually holds them in the UK rather than forwarding orders to a warehouse somewhere in Shenzhen.

Now we all know that most of this type of stuff is made in China. There’s no little studious blokes in UK factories, wearing store coats with a top pocket full of pencils any more. They died out with Fred Dibnah, unfortunately. So there’s no getting away from “Made in China”. But there’s a huge variation in Chinese manufacture. There is the tat on Wish, Ali Baba and Temu at one end of the market. And your iPhone at the other end. We have an office in Hong Kong, and we source personally from Chinese manufacturers that we know.

That is the space we work in. We are not the same as Chinese online sellers. We are quite hybrid being Range Rover enthusiasts ourselves, British but with extensive in-person experience with Chinese manufacture.

Why Buy From Rangey Parts?

We keep these motors in stock here in the UK, sourced from a manufacturer we source many parts from, rather than whichever factory happened to be cheapest that month. They are a solid middle-ground choice for owners who want a reliable part without the inflated cost of the genuine version.

We have a how to fit video below and more explanation between the two types.

LR102237: Final Thoughts

Electric handbrake motors on the L405 and L494 are a known weak point, and most will fail eventually through water ingress. Replacing the unit is the only realistic solution, and once you know which connector you have, the job is straightforward.

We also stock the older three-pin type.

If your Range Rover is beginning to complain about the parking brake, or if you have already had the pleasure of a frozen rear wheel on a frosty morning, LR102237 is the part that will sort it.

It is in stock now at Rangey Parts. Use the buttons below to get the right one for you.
