In this guide, we’ll show you how to remove and replace the steering wheel on a Range Rover L405, taking you through each step from start to finish. There’s a video at the bottom if you prefer to watch it too.
This particular L405 started with a fully leather steering wheel, which we’ve decided to upgrade to a stylish half-wood version. Here’s how we did it.
Step 1: Disconnecting the Battery
To begin, you’ll need to disconnect the vehicle’s battery to ensure safety, as you’ll be handling the airbag and wiring. Head to the boot, remove the spare wheel, and locate the battery. Using a 10mm socket, disconnect the negative terminal by loosening it and placing a non-conductive object between the terminal pole and the wire to prevent accidental reconnection during the process.
Step 2: Releasing the Airbag
On the underside of the steering wheel, you’ll notice a small slot designed for airbag removal. Insert a Torx screwdriver (or similar tool) into this slot, which releases a spring clip securing the airbag. Carefully press to release the clip, and the airbag will come loose. You’ll then see two small clips holding the airbag in place at the top; push these clips to release the airbag fully.
Step 3: Disconnecting Airbag Wiring
The airbag is connected by two wiring looms. The first is an orange clip that must be lifted to release it. Gently disconnect this clip, ensuring not to damage it. For the second connection, use a small flat blade to carefully release the clip that holds it in place. With these removed, the airbag can be set aside safely.
Step 4: Removing Additional Connections
Once the airbag is out, you’ll see more connections to remove. The small pink clip may be stiff, so be patient and avoid using excessive force. Below it, a larger connection can be easily pulled out without any clips to release. These disconnections allow you to access the central bolt that secures the steering wheel itself.
Step 5: Removing the Steering Wheel Bolt
Using a T50 Torx socket, remove the central bolt from the steering wheel. With the bolt removed, the steering wheel should pull off smoothly. Be mindful of the mechanism behind the steering wheel where the wires connect, and ensure that the alignment is preserved for reinstallation.
Step 6: Transferring Parts to the New Steering Wheel
With the steering wheel off, place it on a clean work surface alongside the new one. Begin by removing the trims using a flat-blade screwdriver. To avoid scratches, wrap the screwdriver with a tea towel. The trims will pop off easily. Next, use a T20 screwdriver to remove the paddles and the switch packs on either side. For those who need one, you can buy one on eBay >>here<<.
Step 7: Unplugging and Photographing the Wiring Loom
Once you’ve removed the switch packs, unplug the wiring loom. It can be helpful to photograph the wiring layout for reference during reassembly. There’s a clip in the loom that may resemble a cable tie but is actually a clip with two fins. Carefully release it with a flat blade, ensuring you don’t damage it.
Step 8: Fitting the Wiring Loom into the New Steering Wheel
Now that the original wheel is fully stripped, it’s time to rebuild the new one. Insert the loom into the new wheel, fitting it into the designated channels. Place any modules, such as the heated elements module, back into their original positions.
Step 9: Reinstalling Components
Reinstall each switch pack and reconnect the paddles, using the same screws to secure them. Be cautious with alignment to avoid damaging any plastic tabs. The trims should snap back into place the same way they were removed. Ensure everything is firmly in position.
Step 10: Reinstalling the Steering Wheel
Bring the new steering wheel back to the car. Make sure the two locating pegs line up with the mechanism behind the wheel. Reconnect the plugs and tighten the central T50 bolt securely. As this is a steering component, ensure the bolt is firmly fastened to avoid any issues while driving.
Step 11: Reconnecting the Airbag
Reconnect the airbag by attaching the two wiring clips. Make sure the orange tab clicks securely back into place. Once connected, align the airbag with the wheel, and press it until the three clips hold it in place.
Step 12: Reconnecting the Battery and Testing
Return to the boot, remove the object used to block the battery terminal, and reconnect the negative terminal. The car will start up, and you shouldn’t lose any memory settings. Start the vehicle, check for any warning lights, and ensure everything works as expected. And there you have it: your new steering wheel is fitted, and you’re ready to enjoy the upgraded feel of your Range Rover L405.
